Yeah its a theology issue. I think the reason they came to the conclusion that "Jesus is God" is that to them it made the most sense way to explain it.
Like in definition Jesus was born like any other person, however the Spirit of God was in him, so by that he was fully god but suffered and was in pain like any other, but was also the ultimate sacrifice to be the sacrifice for humanity so that instead of going through "Yahweh" which hebrews speaks about Jesus being a celestial high priest who is the link that you go to takes away your sins and lets you into heaven.
But i don't believe that "just asking for forgiveness is enough" like i think by definition yes you do get forgiven if you truly mean it but that you have to want to improve and walk into Jesus' footsteps and not just say it without meaning it as in "fruits of faith or work".
But thats just how i see it.
Even if lets say Jesus wasn't God. I don't see how that would be an issue. Its not like new testament says "if Jesus is not God then Christianity is useless" it never says it, its just theology that to christians most likely at the time as for now makes the most sense in terms of explanation.
