I think the worst offenders in that regard are people who use their membership in the "follower" group as a status symbol. Having said the requisite magic words puts them in the club, as it were, but once in the club they don't actually use it for anything but one-upmanship. Meanwhile, others are quietly going about their days, trying to improve themselves and the world.
This would also explain why the asshole followers are so vocal and appear to be so numerous -- the people who took the message seriously enough to try to live it simply don't have time for games like that.
