There certainly a lot of people for whom the above is true, there likewise are a lot who unequivocally reject it.
I'm British, not that it matters, but I myself most definitely do and always have (except maybe when I was a young child or young adolescent) unequivocally rejected it.
It's one of the reasons I detest phrases such as "man up" or "grow some balls".
