Though I can how understand someone with a passing familiarity with cosmology might misunderstand what the observational evidence tells us.

The observational evidence can hardly begin to help us understand the universe.  If we could pinpoint the center of the universe from which it all began to expand, we'd understand a lot more. But shifting time/space has obliterated the center and ergo the boundary.

This is difficult to visualize but understanding it is absolutely necessary to understand the prevailing view of the Big Bang. It is not just that a center could no longer be pin pointed.  There never was any center as matter of fundamental principle because every single point in the entire universe is by fundamental principle indistinguishable from any other point regardless of what meaningful criteria you might apply to try to pick one out as a center.
