We don't yet know how DNA first formed but it would have been some form of self-organisation. Science is always learning more.
Personally I hold to the metabolism-first school of abiogenesis.
Well, the RNA world has a lot of evidence to support it. Whether it came after a purely metabolism based life is not clear. Given the capabilities of RNA to catalyze various important reactions, the distinction may not be as large as many in the past thought.
