IMO, it expresses the fundamental disconnect between camps on this position. You;re not going to find many people who consider an abortion to be the best possible outcome of any sexual encounter. This is why bitching about "consequences" is pointless. Abortion isn't made legal or illegal on the basis of conception being a "consequence" of sex..and it isn't in any relevant sense a consequence anyway....unless the law is made to turn it into one.
-That- is why abortion isn't illegal, here. Even though most people would..in a perfect world..like to see it go some other way. The effect of legally stigmatizing the procedure and enforcing birth as a consequence is an abrogation of the rights that our government is constitutionally bound to protect. We've seen the results of an abuse of the power of the state in this way. It's completely unconscionable to seek a return to that...regardless of ones personal opinion or position on the matter.
So..pro-lifers..find some other way. Hell, fund a prgram to make condoms and birth control free at point of access to teens (and everybody else). Do some outreach somewhere besides the statehouse, or sham shaming "clinics". Fund group homes and adoption programs. There are plenty of far less ghoulish ways to achieve the end goal. Have the presence of mind..even, to accept that succeeding in those less ghoulish efforts still won't prevent every abortion.
