There were no original plans to kill Leia .
Poe learns a valuable lesson about patience and trust .
I have yet to see any serious plot holes .

Maybe the command centres and much of the structure, but the majority of the galaxy wide Republic's fleet?
And starkiller base. Is it capable of hyperspace travel or is it designed to be used only a couple of times in a binary star system?
Later novels and books may have answered those questions, but I haven't read them.
