Previous administrations got firm commitments on specific action, specific deadline for each action, and sent in inspectors to verify in return for allowing in food to feed their people when they had a famine there and promised a light water nuclear reactor that can’t be used to produce weapons grade material to replace the one able to produce weapons grade material North Korea was to dismantle.
When North Korea didn’t dismantle it, the light water reactor wasn’t delivered. That was when North Korea had no nuclear deterrence.

Talking is a start. I wouldn’t expect a lot in a short highly publicized meeting. I think we will have to wait and see what happens. It may get shut down, it may end up good. But I think it’s fairly early yet, and find the criticism hollow.
