I know I’ve been souring about the left over the past few years, but I know better than to fall for that sort of bullshit. A “not so different” approach might make sense, but shifting the blame so heavily that it seems like Obama is more anti-immigrant than Trump is fucking dumb. Personal hypocrisy doesn’t make up for the horrible policy any more than hiring a Jewish housemaid/mistress makes up for being one of the most horrifying concentration camp commandants of the entire Nazi era (and that’s really saying something; in the film, Goeth’s antics were actually toned down and we’re extreme enough that even the other Nazis thought he went too far):
I didn't spin anything around so that xenophobia is the fault of the left and not the right. I can see how you might have read that into my remark about some politicians using anti-immigrant rhetoric in areas where organized labor is strong. But just because you can read that into it, doesn't mean that is what I meant. Sure, organized labor has some problems with mass immigration, but that's not what is responsible for such naked nativism as we are currently seeing.
Who tried to make it seem that Obama was more anti-immigration than Trump? I said that Obama was arguably tougher on immigrants than George W.
I try to be careful with impressions about posters in these discussions, because they can be very misleading. But I am under the impression that you believe that I have become soured with the left. I'm not. I am as staunchly left as I have ever been. As the left has grown in popularity, we have been overrun by a large number of illiberal people who don't actually know their right from their left. And they aren't interested in learning the difference. And I get exasperated with them.
