Infanticide has a long history.  A family with too many mouths to feed would dispose of excess children, as well as those with obvious physical deformities.  We know this happened throughout Roman history, during the Golden Age of Greece and in much of pre-Christian Europe.  There's really no reason to doubt that it happened in pre-Islamic Arabia as well. 

But the wholesale extermination of female infants because they were female?  Nah.
