-and those bad people insist that their chistianity dictates that they be bad people. They're not wrong.
Again, anti-religionist statements run to the effect that religion is bad, not that religious people are bad. Religious people are the same as the rest of us, and that means being subject to the same common failures and ticks. Thankfully, most people just completely ignore their own silly fucking religions, lol. I say thankfully, because religion is one of (if not the most) compelling things in human experience. Uniquely suitable for exploiting our manifold human weaknesses.
We see what people do when they think that their god has demanded it. I think that the only other near competitors are state and family. Religions subverts these more often than they subvert religion.
Imagine a pie baking grandkid watching plaid apron wearing hymn singing nana - who pickets abortion clinics with nastygrams and won't talk to her niece on account of how she;s a godless babykilling slut. Nana appears to be motivated by her religion. Nana herself claims to be motivated by her religion..and on account of doing these things Nana feels that she is doing good in the world.
What is anti-intellectual about accepting the fact that it is Nanas religion that has made her so in this instance. With positing an alternate Nana who wasn't a frothing fundy who would, all other things being equal, still be a pie baking grandkid watching plaid apron wearing hymn singer?
The real shittiness of religion isn't to be found in the most obvious suspects or the cruelest places. It's as wholesome as apple pie. It's in the otherwise lovely people that we all know and care for and respect and need to create excuses for - for our own comfort, if for no other reason.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
