The traditional answer is the sin of pride. (hubris) The whole thing is pretty Greek. In Genesis,at least, YHWH has some the more unpleasant traits of many of the Greek gods.
The tower of Babel was meant to LITERALLY reach heaven,making Nimrod (I think) as powerful as God.
I've always found the lessons as subtle as a kick in the nuts: (1) don' mess with YHWH, he tends to overearct.(2) In confounding mens' speech YHWH punished them for their pride and accounted for the many different languages on earth.. ( a spiffy example of 'god of the gasps')
