Suppose Takata made perfectly good airbags (they didn't, but suppose they had). They followed all the guidelines, did excellent quality control, and held their manufacturing processes to the highest possible standards. Now suppose Mr. Smith is killed in a car crash because he removed this top-quality airbag and sold it.
Why on earth would Mr. Smith's family sue Takata?
Similarly, suppose I bought a firearm (again, just supposing). I take it out to the firing range and it blows up in my hand because the doohickey which holds that stanifranz in place was improperly installed. It would make sense to file suit against the manufacturer.
