That's actually a really interesting take on that, could explain sea monsters? Still, you'd think they'd have to be contained by the sea somehow, but there you go lol. It also applies to animal spirits as well. Do plants have spirits? If clothing does then possibly lol.
If you look at the geology the bed rock is a red salty sandstone with lumps of limestone and chalk that used to be coral reefs and a few swampy islands that became our coal fields. Fossil-wise we have ammonites, icthyosaurs and plesiosaurs.
As for other animal ghosts there are more than enough 'black dogs' to shake a stick at and a few horses and carriages, particularly along the A57.
