Abiogenesis and Evolution actually don't leverage chance in the way that people think they do. Ask yourself this, why is life carbon based on this rock? Similarly, grass doesn't evolve into a dog because it can't. If it were chance operating here at a fundamental level it could. The better way to think about this is
"After billions of years life arose from the element most likely to permit long and complex chemical bonds available on this rock. From this simple cell, life evolved into forms most likely to survive given the conditions they were presented with on this rock, in conjunction with well defined laws of inheritance."
The trouble with mapping all of this isn't that we don't understand the mechanism, we understand that very well, we find it difficult to replicate the conditions in the field at any given time due to a lack of data. This may seem to give the appearance of chance, but chance is easily the most minor of the players in this cast.
