Why $15 an hour minimum wage SUCKS

Bob was an economic liberal, he hated it when Australia's government moved to austerity policies, just like liberals here hate Reagan's failed trickle down economics. Even with some of Australia's moves to austerity, Bob constantly agreed that even with some of those measures their system was still better than ours, and I agree, even his conservative sister agreed. 

Australia has better wages and a better health care system, and I don't remember talking to one person while there who thought America's policies were better.

Ah, those two hallmarks of Republican "economics"; trickle down and "socialized health care".  Both have been thoroughly discredited, as you likely know.  Republicans even hired a health insurance guy in the 90's to spread outright lies and misinformation about Canada's healthcare system to stoke fear among American conservatives.  Guess what, it worked beautifully.  Americans were once in favor of a system similar to that of Canada and the UK.  But not any more.

Fact - CURRENT Federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.  That is what a minimum wage worker will be paid per hour. $7.25 an hour. He isn't paid in 2009 dollars adjusted. He isn't paid in Krona, rubles or fucking gold galleons like Harry fucking Potter.

$7.25.

Got that?

$15 is actually MORE than double.

I wasn't going to quibble over piddling change.


So don't go blowing smoke up anybody's ass about what double IS.

It's a doubling in the number value but not real purchasing power.  This is a very important distinction when talking about money.  but what difference would it make if it really was a doubling in actual purchasing power?  That would be about $18 in today's money.  You just seem hung up on the fact that it is a large jump from $7.25 to $15, which is based on what?  What information tells you that this jump is so large that it will be damaging to the economy?  Is it just your intuition?  Have you been reading some economics books?  I'm no economist but I do spend some time reading and listening to actual economists discuss these things so I feel like I have some level of understanding of the issues.  I don't base any of my conclusions on my own intuition.  In fact I think very few people really understand the complexities of economics on their own without some formal training.  The more you (clearly not an economics professional) bellow with confidence, the less you likely know and certainly the less convincing you are to others who consider the issues by consuming data and various professional opinions.

Minimum wage is political fellatio - bought by politicians - at someone else's expense.

The worst part of it - is all the people who get screwed - by giving "mo money" to burger flippers and latte slingers.

Example: My SO currently makes better than double the current minimum wage of $7.25 an hour - working accounts payable for a local family owned business. It's not great money - but it is pretty much the scale for such jobs in this area. She has a 4 year degree in accounting and 25 years experience.

Now along comes Joe Politician - ordering up the political blowjob - so he can score some votes by looking all "compassionate". Gotta get "mo money" to the little guy. Snap- bang - gee whiz -- the greeter at Walmart is making $15 an hour - less than 10 percent less of what my SO makes. Isn't that fucking great???

So why did she spend 4 years getting a degree??? Why did we do without fun toys and not take any vacations for the last 5 years - so we could pay off her student loans???

Gee -- they want to make college free too.....

So now my SO will essentially be a minimum wage worker. DON'T even go on with moronic drivel of "her employer will raise her wages too".....

Are you THAT FUCKING STUPID???? He will not raise her wages. He will FREEZE wages - probably for years - AND he will be forced to lay off some of the employees. Unlike the government - he can't just print up more money when he needs it. Sure - he can pass on some of the costs to customers by raising prices.... HEY - WELCOME TO INFLATION!!!!

ALL minimum wage does - is ensure there are more poor people. All at the bottom of the pay scale.

And you wonder why the rich keep getting richer.
