Mormon: "There is no such thing as rape."

Not long ago an element of this belief existed in the western world. I remember a movie from the 1960's where they were blaming the victim. They blamed a rape case on the sexual revolution and women asserting themselves.

In Afghanistan and the middle east they have similar beliefs about rape. In some countries the rape victim must marry their rapist in order to regain some of her virtue.

In strongly male dominated societies opinions about females get really twisted. Some ancient Greeks didn't even believe that females were truly human. Like they were some sort of genetic accident.

Specifically about the article let's look at a few points you may not be aware of. From what I have heard (this could be false) it is sinful for a Mormon woman to orgasm. Men can do this all they want but women; no. Women can't get into heaven unless their husband calls them in with their secret name. so women need to be pleasing to their husbands or else they will go to hell. Mormons of course adopt the belief from Christianity that women are more susceptible to deception etc blah blah blah.

Over all, the society is male dominated and this domination is reinforced at every level.

There is something called a "Mormon in good standing". You get this mostly by donating a percentage of your income to the church and by not behaving too badly. It works as a "get out of jail free" card. It can cause law enforcement to look the other way.

Mormon society is difficult to break out of. There are very few non Mormons in Mormon country, it's out in a vast desert with isolated communities spread far apart. You can't just hop in a car and drive to the city to escape. Also Mormons have very large tight knit families and small (usually small) tight knit communities. Everything revolves around church and family. If you leave the church you are leaving the only social structure you have ever known and you are leaving your family. Some Mormon families are a little more liberal but a lot are not. So along with the fog from deconversioin, the absence of a supporting community and family, you have to go out into the big scary world which is full of horrible sinners (according to the church).
