That played out pretty clearly in the details of northern europe's conversion. In most cases, it was a political agreement between a handful of elites more than the reality on the ground. That took alot longer, and, as you mention..sustained and direct action with an incalculable list of casualties and collateral damage. Ultimately, though, the current religions we profess have shown their ability to incorporate or subsume similar explanations and narratives about the world if not immediately, then over the course of a few generations. In that light, the failure of those same religions to provide a compelling synthesis in the case of the current cultural truthmaker is new and may be profoundly consequential.
