Debts they took on because the economy all but requires a college degree for most jobs by this point, especially if you expect to afford to eat anything better than dog food (and even graduating is no guarantee that you'll actually get a job) and the costs of college tuition keep going up, often by significantly more than could be justified by inflation. And the pandemic is making the economy even worse, making it even harder to actually get a job. And that's just the tip of the iceberg of the consequences of student debt.
And I'd be part of that 1 in 8 if not for the fact that my grandmother's home sold shortly after I graduated from Columbia and I had to give much of the proceeds to the lenders to pay off the loans.
We spent the last 8 years paying off.my SO's student loans - by scrimping - and making double payments every month.
We have not taken a vacation in that entire time. No new toys. Every purchase has to be considered.
When you take a loan - you take on the MORAL as well as the legal obligation to pay it back....
If that' s too hard for you - pay cash - or do without.
So, personal bankruptcy laws are bother immoral and illegal?
