Are there responsible gun owners, yes. Can some of those responsible gun owners become irresponsible, unbalanced gun owners? Also yes.
Which is why the licenses should be made renewable. I have a friend who operates a small pest control company. He’s got years of experience, a good reputation, and is professionally licensed in his field. But every year, he has to take 16 hours of continuing education and every two years, his business practices are reviewed. Failure to successfully complete either of these would result in the loss of his license and his business. I have a hard time understanding the objection to something similar for gun ownership. Maybe not as frequently as someone who applies potentially lethal chemicals on a daily basis, but I can’t understand why pro-gun people would object to periodic proficiency and psychological re-testing.
And anyone denied a gun license on psychological grounds should have the right of appeal.
