Are executions making the US look bad?

I went to a bible study where a fundamentalist couple tried to teach us that not only was the death penalty okay with God, it was actually demanded by God.

In the early days of christianity, there was very strong pacifist element and the opposition of capital punishment amongst it's followers. It's only when they started to suck up to the Roman empire and gained in power, that they threw these believes overboard.

Christianity is the church of Paul rather than the one of Jesus. And I guess, that's what they're following. Paul argued for everyone to know their place, especially women and slaves. Not much of a difference, back then.
