Why would they when cheaper guns are available?
Do you know how to build a gun? From sctatch?
I know I could. I know at least a dozen guys who could. It is NOT rocket science. Any good machinist could build a gun - and the simplest is a sub-gun. Look at the complexity of a Bren, a Sten, a Mac10 or M2 sub gun. They contain the fewest pieces of any repeater. A revolver is by comparison a much harder build requiring much more complicated, specialized machine tooling.

Capitalists have a long history of selling knowledge - if the price is right.
But you said that limiting guns would make the price of existing guns 'rise to ridiculous levels', which would in turn lead to the manufacture of illegal guns, which would result in the nightmare scenario of gangbangers with submachine guns.
None of that happens in countries that restrict gun ownership. Not here, not the UK, not Canada, not Australia, not Japan...not anywhere. I researched the price of semi-auto shotguns in each of those countries and it doesn't vary by more than about 20 percent (up or down) than US prices. And as far as I can tell (though it's admittedly a harder thing to research), not a single one of those countries appears to be struggling with the problem of home-made submachine guns.
