However, for political reasons (which I don't want to get into), I want to become officially non-Catholic. I don't like the idea that the Catholic Church still technically claims me (and makes it difficult to impossible to officially leave)

I did a little Googling around.  Apparently, the Church has made it more difficult to officially leave its rolls.  Imagine that.  They don't want to lower their numbers.
