Early christian apologists had a handy explanation for why people believed in christ. They responded to accusations that their new faith was idiotic superstition which no would would believe by pointing out that they were not making claims about gods that other people did not already believe. They later expanded on this idea by putting forward the notion of demonic mimicry. Not only was christ like all those other gods that people believed in - demons had made people believe in other gods just like that in order to discredit christ when he came. This eventually filtered all the way down to witches. Yes...witches. Whose power must be an illusion from the devil in order to maintain gods monopoly in the miracle market. It seems silly now, but put yourself in those peoples shoes. They believed that there were people who could do amazing things. Some of them bad, for sure - but some of them needful. If you had a sick kid, and you believed there was a person who could heal your sick kid..at any cost..imagine what it would take to get you to burn that person at the stake.
