It's sort of like the arguments OnlineBiker used to make (I haven't seen him for a couple months), seemingly arguing that because (for instance) Trump's attempt at overturning the results of the 2020 election ultimately failed, that he should be off the hook for trying to make it happen.
This is precisely why the law recognizes such crimes as attempted murder, attempted robbery, attempted arson, and so on. Failure to succeed at a criminal enterprise is not a defense.
