I live in the Bible Belt. It's not that bad here in NC - not as bad as some places. At least not in the Queen City.
Pad -
According to my coworker, who lives in the backwoods, I don't have a southern accent. According to my friends from 300 miles north, and friends who live across the country on the west coast, I most certainly do. Tiberius and Ryft find immense pleasure in making me talk about Wal-Mart or getting me upset, because supposedly it gets thicker then. I guess it's relative. If I'm talking to non-Southern people, it tends to go away, as I was raised in an area that had no real identifiable accent at all. If my roommate and I are jawing over something and getting worked up, I sound like I'm from Mississippi.
I try not to say "y'all" unless I'm in friendly company but it does slip out.
