The traditional view is that women were put in a state of punishment for the original sin. The christian faith has perpetrated some of the worst denigration of women throughout history.

EDIT: Arguments that morality is equivalent between the sexes does defy the statistics, but the reasoning is unlikely to be purely physical, but in terms of social upbringing.
