Bill Maher speaks a lot of common sense and is entertaining when he bashes loons, but of course he is fallible and has said some ludicrous things in his time. Been owned a couple times, shot down, out-debated, etc, but that's not a bad thing. Just shows he's fallible and can get it wrong.

It may also mean he's a comic and rather facile social commentator, not a philosopher.But,he's damn sight brighter,[and funnier] than Penn Gillette,who is at times also confused with being a deep thinker.

PS: "Common sense" is an oxymoron,probably because it's usually wrong.
