The problem is not with the working, but with the comprehension.
The question is worded so that you may wrongly assume that;
x+y=$110
Once you make that "instinctual" leap, rather than correct comprehension of the question, you have yourself in a world of wrong answer trouble. Its a reading problem, not a maths one.
