I don't know if it's hard to defend religion. If you believed in Islam, you can argue for religion on similar grounds as the following:
1. God exists and it's the nature of humanity to know of his existence. (foundation)
2. God cares about humanity (based on foundation)
3. If he cares about humanity, he will send them guidance
4. Therefore God out of his care and grace, sent guidance.
Premise 1 has not been proven to be false by anyone, and a lot of people believe in it. Premise 2 is also believed by those believing premise 1. Premise 3 is believed by most of humanity. Premise 4 is thus believed by majority of humanity.
This is very intuitive. I remember when presented with people whom believe in God but not Messengers, I said, how God out of his grace, not send Messengers?
So it seems Deism needs as much defense as Does Religion. And by premise 1, Theism can be believed in a properly basic manner.
Another argument can be along the lines:
We know people the more we hear for them and they talk to us (communication).
Communication from God would help us know God better.
God wants humans to give humans opportunity to know him in best way, hence will communicate with them.
