I have observed current affairs in the United States for over a decade now. So I can conclude that in my view the United States is a very racist society. My country Australia often gets regarded as a very racist nation, especially by visiting Americans. However the racism in Australia is nothing compared to what I have observed in the United States. Not to mention I have observed that Americans in general are in deep denial about racism in their society. While we Australians are less racist than Americans, but more open about the racism in our society.
So I am convinced some of the opposition to Barack Obama's presidency has been driven by racism. Because Obama has identified himself as being African American. However Barack Obama has not been a particularly bad president, although not a great one.
For example; despite some bad policies, he seems to have good intentions and takes principled stands on issues. Juila Gillard is a poll driven hack in comparison to Barack Obama. Imagine Barack Obama promising to introduce Obamacare in the presidential election and then deciding to backtrack on it after the election, when he felt it would weakening his position in the polls. Juila Gillard did something similar in regard in introducing a carbon tax, despite going to the election saying it would not be introduced if her party became the government.
However the opposition he has faced from some Americans is more than what our Prime Minister Julia Gillard has faced and she has been a lot worse as Prime Minister than Barack Obama has been as a president.
