People believe all kinds of things.
Some believe the Catholic church is still a "force for good", despite historical and ongoing events demonstrating otherwise.
The institution, like most organisations, only cares about itself; its goals, its agenda, its money, its wealth. It strives to always expand its power-base. They don't care about you or me. They don't give a shit about their penniless followers and care even less for their fiercest critics. Yet people still believe they are trying to help them, to preserve some subjective view on the "quality" and "sanctity" of life.
That's people for you.
