If you'd quoted a bit more, you'd have noticed this...
In other words; closing them? Yeah, kind of a bad idea. I'm not understating it, either, I mean it was KIND of a bad idea. It was a good idea, but when put into practice...not so much.
That's a major problem unto itself and I dunno if we should go into it or maybe I should open a thread on it, but to touch upon it briefly; you should be given a choice; take your medications, or go to the mental ward. Like with guns. Take your classes and do your registration or forfeit your right to carry them and go unarmed. If you can't afford the medications, then the state should provide them. Maybe cut a few billion off the bloated "defense" budget to fund it. I know it's a touchy subject but these mental disorders manifesting are what ultimately results in these bloodbaths. Our society has this lackluster "la dee da" bleeding-heart liberal approach to the mentally sick. "They're equals!" No. No we are not. We are not equals to people who are functionally normal. We have a problem. And unfortunately that problem often manifests in ways that make it the problem of others, quite often violently so. To me all this talk of gun control doesn't mean much. These massacres aren't committed by normal people, they're committed by people who are fucked in the head and society doesn't do anything because we "have to protect their liberties."
I hate to say it but if you're not of sound mind, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Hell, I'd definitely qualify in that department, and bet your ass if the state paid for my antipsychotics I'd be one of the first to sign up. But if you're a schizophrenic who refuses to take your medication, well...you were given the choice, and you chose to be physically isolated from society. The ones who refuse are usually the ones who turn violent anyways. And, really, do unmedicated schizophrenics and dissociatives REALLY function THAT fucking terrific? No. If they don't go fucking apeshit and kill someone, they usually end up destitute and homeless. Why? Because they're not capable of properly thinking for themselves; the most important aspect of self-control, the fucking BRAIN, is malfunctioning for them and therefore they're NOT capable of making informed decisions, because their information is being warped by their own minds.
Roots, see? Gotta kill the roots of the problem, not the plant. Instead of everyone screaming about "pro guns" or "pro control" we should be going "How do we stop X from feeling the impulse to kill Y?" This is what drives me nuts about gun control debates is how people are taking the two stances that are the LEAST productive for the overall problem. "Yes" or "no." There's a lot more answers to the question than that. I just wanna know why I feel like I'm the only one mentioning them.
Quote:The process of deinstitutionalization is intended to give more hope to the mentally ill whom institutions were harming. While this process was well intended based on the promising future of these drugs, it appears to have failed. Many state run institutions were closed down and released the mentally ill onto the streets. These programs, attempts to place the mentally ill back in society to be helped by the community members, day programs, and medications were not fully implemented to the full extent needed to replace institutions. This process led to an overwhelming number of mentally ill loose in society, becoming criminals due to lack of treatment.
