The excuses given for the litany of things it goes on to disavow amount to little more than imagining that the people who bought said garbage were essentially ignorant savages, incapable of understanding something as "complicated" as the "truth". It was very common, at the time, to imagine things like this. Gentile bigotry - the folks espousing it (and I grant them this) probably didn't even realize it.
