RE: Closet Atheist Coming Out and Telling Family and Friends You're An Atheist

I completely agree with the dependence angle. Many people make the mistake of informing their families that they are atheist, gay, what-have-you, and they are kicked out of the home with no place to go. The good thing to do in that situation is to ensure one already has friends with whom one can stay when one's parents go ballistic.
I was in my first year of college when I came out of the gay closet to my family, and I was disowned. When summer arrived, I had no where to go. Luckily, I had a friend who let me return home with her where I stayed the summer.
