As much as I'd like to put it down to religion, truth is many cultures put down women even without religion. The one I'm most familiar with is the chinese culture (which i'm a part of). Confucius himself has a few quotes that say women are less than men and blablablabla. I was looking this up when i found a forum with people defending confucius and saying he didn't really say that, lol. It's like what religious people do with the bible almost.
Can you believe I was made to memorize this crap when I was in school? Yea, and it's still going on.
And to this day there'll be chinese people with traditional thinking that say that girls are worthless. My dad, I highly suspect, thinks that way, because when I was a kid he laughed at me and said girls can never be pilots.
