Two party system is a dominant reality, whether you like it or not. If you don't vote for the party you hate slightly less, you increase the chance of the party you hate slightly more. Your actions would have had zero effect upon the zero chance that a third party has.
Every third party to the left of the democrats, regardless of their avowed intentions, is in practical effect an electoral arm of the Republican party, just as every third party to the right of the republican is in practical effect an electoral arm of the Democratic party.
