RE: Have you ever felt you were missing out on the good things church has to offer?

I can't miss what I've never spent much time doing. I've attended church services only to appease certain church-going family members, and that very rarely (think midnight mass stuff). I find all the ritual and expense to put on the show rather vulgar. I am impressed with the beauty of the buildings but simultaneously sad over the underlying inspiration for them.
The only exception was prowling around the Exeter Cathedral in Devon while the choir was practicing for Evensong. I gave myself over to their extremely moving music, sat undisturbed at the base of one of the massive stone columns and just listened to the impeccable beauty of it with tears coursing down my cheeks. I only wish humans could be so inspired by the jaw-dropping natural world all around them without necessity of assigning credit for same to a god.
