So I've read about Sarah Palin's book, about the war on Christmas. Not read the book itself because I'm really, really fed up of first world Christians whining about being persecuted and I suspect it would make me cross.
I have a question for you atheist folks.
If I, being a Christian, wished you a happy Christmas, would you be OK with that? Are there any circumstances you would find it offensive?
I might consider the wording a bit odd, in the States people usually say 'Merry Christmas!', but I generally take things in the spirit in which they are offered. For example, if I offered 'Happy Holidays!' first, and got 'Merry CHRISTmas!!' gritted out at me between their teeth, as a sort of correction for not saying 'Christmas', I might find it a little offensive, as it was intended to be. As far as I know, that only ever happens in the States. There's a certain kind of believer that will tell somene they know is an atheist or member of a minority religion 'Merry Christmas!' as a way of reminding us that it's their religion that holds the power in this country.
A regular 'Merry Christmas!' would get a seasonal greeting back, depending on the day and my mood; with 'Merry Christmas!' certainly being in my repertoire. I just don't feel any obligation to say that over 'Season's Greetings' or 'Happy Christmahannakwanzaka!'.
