I have heard or read somewhere that a reference to this firey place in the old testament is called Gehenna. Except Gehena is not some spiritual place of eternal torment. It was just a valley where they burned the bodies of the dead. There's also the idea that there is fire, but all it does is destroy your soul. Not torment it for eternity. So cessation of existence for those who don't follow Yahweh. Pretty much what atheists think will happen anyway, so not a good method of converting people.
