It's a lot like smoking, or drinking, or drugs or overeating. You can offer people the truth but they don't want to hear it if it means giving something up.
While I appreciate the sentiment you're trying to get across, I'm not sure how this should change anyone's approach. Have you ever tried to explain to a drug addict that they're an addict? They are purposefully ignoring reality in order to stay in their comfort zone, and gentle fact-pointing doesn't sink in. I'm not advocating being abusive, but there comes a point when the kid-glove approach is futile.
And when any contrary information is being ignored with self-righteous smugness, you have reached that point.
