The fact that religion is capable of skewing people's morality and obfuscating evil with good. It justifies the sickest of things and calls it piety at the end of the day. Genital mutilation, decapitation, wife beating, child abuse, brainwashing and lying are all moral in many religions.To be a truly religious person you must lie and lie often because the amount of skeletons in a holy writ is unbelievable. As to how religion grew out from mythology based paganism I do not know but the monstrosity we call religion has outgrown it's own britches.

I would make exceptions for Buddhisn, Shintoism and strains of Hinduism but other than that, 80% of the worlds religions need to vanish. Never in my life have I seen a monopoly that values ignorance.
