If it's just debating advice in general, I'd say:
-Be at least somewhat cordial. A bit o' snark isn't usually frowned upon, as long as you don't become an asshole. On the same side, don't take shit from belligerent people.
-Learn to spot bad arguments, especially circular arguments, arguments from ignorance and non sequiturs, as they're quite common. Basically, be able to spot improperly formed arguments.
-Stick to the topic at and and make sure your opponent(s) do as well. There's no problem with bracketing off certain topics if they are beyond the scope of what's being discussed.

I would add to this to remember not to take the bait when a red herring is put out there. Learn to recognize them, call them out for what they are, point out that it's not relevant and then stay on topic.
