I think I ask, because I find myself thinking about religion a lot lately. Sometimes I think how nice it would be to have never been exposed to religion and never think about it at all. So I wonder why such people would want to discuss it.
People have brought up some good reasons that I never thought about:
- mobilizing and encouraging atheists to challenge stupid theistic political meddling
- expressing the frustrations of a minority atheist in a majority theist community
- reexamining your atheist position
- atheists tend to be more open to new ideas
- having fun
- ... (other stuff I can't remember)
