I might be wrong but I thought that half of all children used to die before they reached adult hood. Not to mention mothers who died during labors. Were we really able to cope with diseases any better in our past? I think if civilization broke down we would just go back to 1/2 of all children dying. I don't think we would be worse off than that.
Eventually, we may tend back to that ratio... but, at first, a grand majority that would not have bred, are now breeding and passing on the wimp genes.
