Are those two choices really mutually exclusive? For all practical purposes, the desktop IS a single, solid surface in the macro world. In fact, it would be crazy to treat it as anything but that. The fact that it is something very different at the quantum level seems irrelevant to me.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
