To him - and most Christians for that matter - it is about competing for a worldview that explains everything, so if you're pointing out the flaws in one worldview, you must therefore be promoting another. You see it in their responses all of the time. Criticize Christianity and they'll reply with "you think science explains why we're here?"
I think it's most likely a defense mechanism against truly processing criticism.
