Better ask where that stupid belief came from. In the Greek and Roman world, often times it was considered a sign that the person suffering from epilepsy was touched by the gods and therefore blessed. Julius Caesar, for example, was suffering from epilepsy. And as with everything in life, pagan scholars were far more advanced than the ensuing christian stupidity worship. Some of them rightly assumed it to be an ailment of the brain and that it could be treated, given the right procedures.
