I think I was luckier, that my parents struck me very rarely and never over a religious issue. My mom and her parents of course remained stuck in very conservative viewpoints of the kind you found in Kentucky and Indiana back in the '50s and '60s, and I didn't measure up that well, but they didn't turn their love away from me on account of it.

I can't tell from reading your post about your family and their love states with respect to you; it's not my business to judge either you or them from the gallery. Saudi Arabia is different from the USA and I don't know much about it. Sometimes I think parents love their kids, but hit them because certain vivid religious teachings convince them the flames in hell are literally like being doused in gasoline and lit up. Of course they don't want their kid to suffer this fate, so anything they have to do to try to prevent it, including hitting, seems worthwhile. I dunno. That "spare the rod, spoil the child" thing. There's kind of a point to that saying, but it's taken waayyyy too far.
