Douglas Lockhart's 'The Dark Side of God' makes a heroic attempt to do so and is therefore worth reading. Good luck though with any of the many branches of Christianity accepting the findings of modern biblical scholarship especially since it appears Christ was trying to tell us there's no need to insert religious authority and institutions between the individual and God. Can you imagine Rome swallowing that one without choking to death?
